Postpartum Eating Disorder Relapse: Recovery After Birth Trauma

Postpartum eating disorder relapse is more common than we talk about.

And during my first postpartum experience, I almost relapsed.

If you’ve been here a while, you know I’m an eating disorder therapist — and someone in eating disorder recovery myself.

For years, my recovery felt solid. Grounded. Steady.

And then postpartum hit me like a tidal wave.

Birth Trauma, Preeclampsia, and Postpartum Mental Health

My postpartum story included preeclampsia, multiple hemorrhages, and significant birth trauma. The kind of trauma that shakes you so deeply, you barely recognize yourself.

I felt hollow. Fragmented.

Like I was watching my life happen from the outside.

The transition into motherhood is already raw and disorienting. When you layer birth trauma and postpartum mental health struggles on top of that, it can feel unbearable.

I wasn’t just exhausted.

I was drowning.

When an Eating Disorder Comes Back Postpartum

That’s when my eating disorder came knocking again.

Soft. Seductive. Familiar.

“Let me help you feel in control again.”

If you’ve struggled with disordered eating, you know how convincing that voice can sound — especially during seasons of chaos like early motherhood.

Postpartum is full of body changes, identity shifts, sleep deprivation, and loss of control. For many women, it can trigger:

  • Eating disorder relapse

  • Postpartum depression

  • Postpartum anxiety

  • Increased body image distress

  • A return to restrictive or compensatory behaviors

It makes sense. When everything feels out of control, the eating disorder promises relief.

But it’s a lie.

Choosing Recovery in Postpartum

Saying “no” to relapse wasn’t a one-time decision.

It was daily. Sometimes hourly.

Alone at home on mental health leave, I’d hear the voice:

“You could skip lunch. No one would know.”

But I would know.

And that knowing — that quiet clarity — mattered.

So I chose nourishment.

I chose therapy.

I chose medication.

I chose reaching out.

I chose compassion over punishment.

And slowly, the intrusive thoughts softened. The fear loosened its grip. I found my way back to myself — not by shrinking my body, but by caring for it.

Postpartum Eating Disorder Recovery Is Not Linear

Recovery is not a straight line.

And postpartum recovery after birth trauma? Even less so.

If you’re navigating eating disorder recovery during pregnancy or postpartum, please hear this:

You are not failing.

Your thoughts do not mean you’re broken.

And support matters.

Relapse urges during postpartum don’t mean you’ve undone your healing. They mean you’re human — in one of the most vulnerable seasons of life.

I’m still here.

Still choosing myself.

Every day.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

If you’re pregnant or postpartum and noticing eating disorder thoughts creeping back in…
