Pregnancy Anxiety, Control, and Food | Healing Body Image in Pregnancy
Many pregnant people have told me, “I just want my baby here, so I know they are safe.
When I hear this, it often reflects a deep and understandable anxiety about a baby’s well-being during pregnancy.
Not being able to see your baby — and to know they are okay — can feel incredibly unsettling. This uncertainty can bring up fears of miscarriage, fears that birth won’t go as planned, or worries about how family dynamics and relationships might change once the baby arrives.
And when humans feel uncertain, we often reach for control.
Unfortunately, during pregnancy, that need for control can show up in harmful or stressful ways — especially around food, weight, and the body.
When Pregnancy Anxiety Turns Into Food or Body Control
I’ve seen pregnant people:
Try to eat “perfectly,” believing the right foods will guarantee a healthy baby
Follow rigid eating routines or repetitive food patterns to reduce fear
Engage in obsessive or compulsive behaviors around meals and nutrition
Monitor weight gain closely, seeing “perfect” weight gain as proof they’re doing pregnancy right
Feel like a failure when their weight gain doesn’t match medical guidelines
These behaviors often don’t come from vanity — they come from love, fear, and a longing to protect your baby.
But when control becomes rigid or anxiety-driven, it can add emotional strain, guilt, and disconnection from your body.
The Truth About Control in Pregnancy and Parenthood
Wanting control is human. It’s part of how we make sense of uncertainty — something we begin learning as toddlers (which makes total sense once you’ve raised one!).
Pregnancy, postpartum, and parenthood can feel jarring because they reveal a hard truth:
We don’t have as much control as we wish we did.
That realization can feel frightening.
But it can also become an invitation — to shift from control toward trust, support, and compassion.
You Don’t Have to Carry This Alone
